Everyone will tell you that handmade jewellery is the gold standard. As a Rome-trained gemmologist, I'm here to tell you it isn't quite that simple.
There's a romance to the word handmade, and I understand it. But when you look closely at how a piece comes together (the metal, the waste, the price and the finish) the picture changes. At Lucano, we make cast jewellery, and we do it on purpose. Here's why we think it's the more ethical, more precise and more honest way to make fine jewellery.
Handmade jewellery and the waste nobody talks about
When a ring is made by hand, 40 to 60 percent of the gold can end up as filings and dust on the workbench. Yes, those filings are collected and sent to be refined. But refining is a whole extra process, with more handling, more energy and more chemistry, just to recover metal that never needed to be lost.
For a brand built on recycled gold jewellery and ethical sourcing, that waste doesn't sit right. Sustainable jewellery isn't only about where the gold comes from. It's also about how little of it you throw away on the way to the finished piece.
You pay for the gold that becomes dust
Here's what nobody tells you about handmade pricing: all that wasted gold still has to be paid for. It gets built straight into the cost of your ring.
So you're not only paying for the metal on your finger. You're paying for the metal that ended up on the bench floor. Casting lets us put the gold where it belongs, in your jewellery, and price the piece for what it actually is.
Is cast jewellery as strong as handmade?
This is the one real argument for handmade. When gold is hammered, compressed and worked by hand, the metal becomes dense and strong. Traditional casting could leave tiny pockets of porosity.
Modern suction casting has closed most of that gap. The molten gold is drawn into the mould under vacuum, which pushes out air and gives a dense, consistent result. Combined with lost wax casting, it reproduces every detail of the original model.
Precision a hand can't match
Today's fine jewellery designs are intricate. Settings are finer, details are tighter and tolerances are smaller than ever. Making them perfectly by hand is close to impossible, and even skilled makers see small variations creep in.
With 3D printing and casting, we get that precision every time. The design you approve is the design you receive, down to the last claw.
Cast jewellery isn't all the same
This is where we part ways with most of the industry. Much of the cast jewellery on the market is mass-produced overseas and finished entirely by machine. Some of it is made with set-in-place casting, where the stones go into the mould and the metal is cast around them, so nobody ever sets them by hand. Other pieces are tipped into a tumbler with a hundred more rings to polish against each other, then machine-thinned and machine-set. It's fast and uniform, and it's the same piece a hundred times over.
That's not how we work. We cast in a high-quality gold alloy, then every piece is hand-assembled, hand-finished, hand-polished and hand-set by us. So the real comparison was never handmade versus cast. It's our cast and hand-finished against their cast and machine-finished. Same starting point, completely different soul.
One piece, for one person
Every piece we make is one piece, made for one person. Not one of a hundred in a tumbler, not machine-set and shipped. It's cast with care and finished by hand for the person who will wear it.
That's the Lucano difference. If you're considering an engagement ring or a piece made just for you, start a bespoke piece and we'll talk you through how it's made.
