Champagne diamonds are natural diamonds in warm shades from light straw through golden brown to deep cognac — real diamonds in every respect, coloured by the same geological forces that made Western Australia's Argyle mine the pink diamond capital of the world. As a gemmologist who spent two decades inside the diamond supply chain, I want to give you the honest story on Australia's coloured diamonds: what makes them pink or champagne, why Argyle changed everything, and where the value really sits today.

What gives a diamond colour in the first place?

A chemically pure, structurally perfect diamond is colourless. Colour enters in two ways. The first is chemistry: a few nitrogen atoms scattered through the carbon lattice absorb blue light and produce yellow; a trace of boron produces blue. The second is far stranger — plastic deformation. As some diamonds are carried up through the earth, immense heat and pressure physically shear the crystal lattice, creating microscopic distortions called graining that change how the stone absorbs light. That structural distortion — not a trace element — is what produces most pink, red and brown diamonds.

In other words: a champagne diamond and a pink diamond are close cousins. Both owe their colour to a lattice that has been squeezed and slipped, just to different degrees and with different results. It's also why fine pinks are so rare — the deformation has to be exactly severe enough to colour the stone without destroying it.

The champagne and cognac scale

Brown diamonds were long dismissed as industrial material until Argyle — which produced them in quantity — did something clever: it named them. The trade scale runs from C1–C2 (light champagne), through C3–C4 (medium champagne), C5–C6 (dark champagne), to C7 (cognac — a deep, warm brandy brown). Some stones carry a secondary pinkish or orange flash that lifts them further.

What should you pay attention to when buying? Evenness of colour, warmth of tone (avoid greyish or greenish casts), and cut quality — a well-cut champagne stone glows like late-afternoon light. They pair beautifully with yellow gold, which deepens the warmth, and they cost a fraction of an equivalent white diamond, which makes them one of the genuine value plays left in natural diamonds.

Argyle: the mine that made pink famous

The Argyle mine, in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia, operated from 1983 until November 2020. It was a freak of geology twice over: it was hosted in lamproite rather than the classic kimberlite, and it produced more than 90% of the world's pink diamonds — stones so scarce that the finest were sold not on a price list but through an invitation-only annual tender.

Even at Argyle, pinks were a rounding error: a tiny fraction of one percent of production. The overwhelming majority of the mine's output was brown, champagne and near-colourless material. When the pit closed in 2020, the world's primary source of pink diamonds simply stopped existing — no comparable deposit has been found. Buying Australian coloured diamonds today

Argyle-certified pinks now trade as collector's stones. Provenance is everything: an Argyle laser inscription and certificate materially affects value. If you're offered an "Argyle pink" without documents, walk away — after the closure, paperwork is the product.

Champagne and cognac diamonds are the accessible side of the same story. Supplies of fine Australian-origin champagne stones are finite for the same reason the pinks are, yet prices remain modest. For a client who wants warmth, character and a genuinely Australian stone, they're my quiet recommendation — particularly in engagement rings with yellow-gold settings, or as unexpected accents in wedding bands.

A word on treatments and imitations. Brown diamonds can be colour-improved by HPHT processing, and irradiated stones exist across every fancy colour. A reputable seller will disclose any treatment in writing, and significant stones should carry an independent certificate stating the colour is natural. This is the same transparency standard we apply to everything we source — if a claim can't be verified, we don't make it.

Designing with warm diamonds

Champagne stones reward design that leans into their warmth rather than fighting it: 18k yellow gold, bezels and rubover settings, or a champagne centre flanked by white side stones for contrast. Are champagne diamonds real diamonds?

Completely. Same crystal, same hardness 10, same brilliance mechanics as a white diamond — the colour comes from natural distortion of the crystal lattice during its journey to the surface.

Why did the Argyle mine close?

The economic ore body was exhausted after 37 years of production. The mine closed in November 2020 and has been undergoing rehabilitation since; its pink diamond supply has not been replaced by any other source.

Are champagne diamonds cheaper than white diamonds?

Substantially — often a small fraction of the price of an equivalent white stone. Fancy pinks sit at the opposite extreme, among the most expensive gems per carat ever sold.

What makes a diamond pink?

Not a trace element. Pink (like most brown) colour comes from plastic deformation — shear stress that subtly rearranges the carbon lattice so it absorbs light differently. It's geology you can wear.
